Overcoming Shame in Singleness - Waiting for a Husband

Let me not be put to shame, spring flowers, psalms

“Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” Romans‬ ‭10‬:‭11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

His Word promises us that we will not be put to shame. If you’re single and longing to be a wife, you’ve likely felt the weight of shame that can come with that. I want you to know that you are not alone, I too experienced this and I know many others have also.

While it’s natural to seek ways to combat and overcome this shame, know that it’s perfectly normal to feel this way and even more so when surrounded by those who are married. Often, we internalize feelings of failure in our wait for a husband, while the enemy whispers lies that we don’t measure up. Maybe like me, you spent time running from God and getting caught in the wrong relationships and you know that is why it’s taking longer to meet the man God has for you because you had stuff you just had to work through, or have taken longer to learn to put God first in your life. Or maybe it's none of those things and you have served Him faithfully all your life camped at His feet but still you have not seen an answer to prayer and you are fed up going to parties or family events without a plus one.

God offers to remove the shame of our sin, but there’s also a different kind of shame one that can arise during the waiting seasons of unanswered prayers. He fully understands the struggles we face in this world and the importance of our desires. There’s no shame in experiencing this feeling as a single woman awaiting a husband, particularly during prolonged waiting.

Therefore I encourage you not to strive to get rid of it but use it to bring you closer to God. God knows all if this and He understands all our troubles we have in this world, He knows whats important to us. In the story of Hannah she no doubt felt shame that she was childless, she was constatly tormented by her husbands ‘other’ wife and she let it drive her to the point where she cried out to God bodly and He answered her.

Cling to His promises and the verses that declare you will not be put to shame. Pray boldly, reminding God of His commitments to you:

“Lord, you have promised that you will not put me to shame but yet I remain single while others are married. I trust your Word, knowing you delight in prospering me and fulfilling the desires of my heart. Thank you for bringing me the blessing of a husband in your perfect time. Amen.”

Then wait in faith knowing that God is good, He is rearranging things to bring an answer to your prayer and that in due time you shall surely walk in all the fullness of His blessings.
